Endometriosis is a painful condition in which tissue grows outside of the uterus. This tissue growth resembles the tissue that usually lines the inside of the uterus. The primary spots where Endometriosis is usually found include ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvic region. However, in certain cases, it may spread to the pelvic organs and get increased. Tissue growth is not the primary concern, but its nature is. As the tissue resembles the nature of the tissue lining the uterus, it acts like it- grows, thickens, breaks down and bleed with each menstrual cycle. However, unlike the tissue inside, it cannot drain from the body and thus gets trapped.
After some time, such tissues start irritating and may also develop into scars and adhesions. The ultimate consequence of endometriosis is that the internal pelvic organs start sticking to each other and cause problems.
Some of the common symptoms of Endometriosis include:
- Pelvic pain mild to severe
- Dysmenorrhea- pain and cramps during menstrual periods
- Painful bowel movements and urination
- Profuse bleeding during the menstrual period
- Infertility
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Diarrhoea
- Constipation
- Bloating
